Shirley. Momma. Mom. Granny. Whatever you knew her as, Shirley Hammer treated you like family.

Shirley Ann Burrow was born on April 16,1939 in Clarksville, TX as the daughter of Henry Fate and Hattie Bell (Stevens) Burrow. Sister to Charles Burrow (Bonnie). Wife to Robert "Pete" Hammer. Mother to Susan Hammer Briggs, Sharon Elaine Record, and Robert Randall "Randy" Hammer. Mother in law to Kenny Briggs and David Record. Grandma to Megan (Gregg), Michaela (Danny), Josh (Lindsey), Caleb, and Seth. She was also a great Granny to Harper, Reese, Cole, and Hayes, Mitchell. Sister in law, aunt, cousin, and friend to many!

Pete and Shirley met in Vernon, TX at a stop light. He thought she looked good so he talked to her across the cars. She went back  to work and told the story to her friend Linda who then shared that was her brother! The rest is history, and they married on March 8, 1962. Together they created a home in Muenster, TX before moving to Lewisville, TX where they have resided ever since. They welcomed three beautiful children within three years. Family was the center of their life, and it is still evident today.

Shirley was known to accept and care for everyone. If the whole family showed up to her house, you can bet that there was a fully home cooked meal ready to be served even when she didn't think she had anything in the pantry. Her 31 years of service to the Lewisville ISD child nutrition department didn't go unnoticed either. After staying at home to raise her three kids she started working in the school cafeteria and worked her way up to a supervisor. Kitchen cleanliness, safety, and a balanced hot meal was important for her. When she retired, the celebration of her years of service was attended by so many because she made a lasting impact on all those that she encountered and worked with over the years. Her long time friend, Dorothy Davis, said it best when she said, "Everyone loved Shirley!"

Shirley loved sports and cheered on the Dallas Cowboys and Texas Rangers. We would like to think the Rangers are going to win the World Series just for her. She even paid attention to Ohio State when her grandson-in-laws from the north joined the family. Her passion came out in yelling at the TV and the occasional drop of the S word.

When you walked in their house you would typically find her sitting in the kitchen watching the news or her "soaps". She would quickly direct you to the snack drawer and make sure you were well fed. Getting up and dressed every day was also important to her. She would roll her hair and put her makeup on at her vanity each morning, even when we visited their lake house at Cedar Creek Lake.

Shirley had a smile or a smirk that you would recognize from a mile away. Her scent was like comfort, and her hugs were tight. Generosity was just part of her character, and caring for others was second nature.

She was so loved, and even to the end made sure we were all good before she could move on to celebrate her new life with her Heavenly Father. The memories we have will be cherished forever.

A service to celebrate Shirley's life will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday, October 30, 2023, at Mulkey-Mason Funeral Home in Lewisville. The family will receive friends from 4:00 to6:00. p.m.  Sunday, October 29, 2023, also at the funeral home. Interment will follow at a later date at Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery.
