Joseph F. Mahoney, Jr., of Flower Mound, TX, died in an automobile accident on the evening of December 24, 2023.  A graduate of Holy Cross College and Clark University with degrees in economics, he commanded a Marine infantry company in I Corps, South Vietnam, 1967-68.  Following his Marine Corps service, he worked for Prudential Insurance, 1970-99, concluding a distinguished career as president of Prudential Preferred, and later as president and CEO of Hartford Life Private Placement.

He was, in every sense, a "man for others" – demanding of himself while encouraging those around him; a natural leader who brought out the best in his colleagues; a man of warm heart, unselfish spirit, and strong Christian witness, generous with his many friends, and passionately committed to his family.  During his Marine service along Vietnam's DMZ he was awarded the Bronze Star for courage under fire.  He befriended a young Vietnamese Catholic priest and helped build a parish orphanage for children of the war.  They lost touch when Joe's combat tour ended.  Forty years later, learning that the priest had survived the fighting, he returned to Vietnam to resume the friendship and assist the priest, by then a bishop, in his pastoral work.  In retirement he was active in Scripture study, prison ministry, and other charitable efforts and apostolic work.  Joe's Catholic faith and his love for the Eucharist were central to his life, shaping his mind, his heart, and his engagement with the world.

Joe is survived by his beloved wife Gail of 58 years, his eight children, and 24 grandchildren: son Kim, his wife Danielle, and their children KJ and his wife Kristen, Joey, and Mark; son Joe, his wife Beth, and their children Abby and Joe IV ("Mamba"); daughter  Katie, her husband Larry, and their children Charles, Audrey, and Georgia; daughter Becky, her husband Tom, and their children Ally, Tommy, Kylie, and Jimbo; son Dan, his wife Oreet, and their son Liam; daughter Sarah, her husband Perry, and their children Siobhan, AJ, and Finnegan; son John-Paul, his wife Meghan, and their children Mary, Breanne, Katherine, Tim, and Clare; and daughter Theresa, her husband Matt, and their children Henry and Jack.

A wake will be held on January 8, 2024, at the Mulkey-Mason Funeral Home, 740 South Edmonds Lane in Lewisville, TX, (972) 436-4581, from 5 pm to 8 pm.  A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Philip the Apostle Catholic Church, 5201 Cross Timbers Road, in Flower Mound, TX, at 11 am on January 9, followed at 2:15 pm by military honors and interment at Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery.
