John F. Brevelle

July 7, 1937 - September 30, 2026

John Frederick Brevelle, lovingly known as “Fred” to his family, passed away peacefully at his home in Lewisville, Texas, on September 30, 2026, at the age of 89, closely attended by his loved ones.

John was born and raised in Sherman, TX, but spent 3 of his early teenage years abroad in Japan with his parents. He related stories of Japan and hiking trails on Mount Fuji, and still has his walking staff, called a kongōzue, with branded trail stamps marking his hiking achievements. John returned to make Texas his home and graduated from Sherman High School in 1955, where he played varsity football. He continued both his athletic and academic pursuits at Oklahoma State University, playing football and graduating in 1959 with a degree in Civil Engineering.

While in college, he married his high school sweetheart, Doris (“Dottie”) Ann Wise. Their marriage was a partnership built on love, devotion, and adventure. They made their home first in Carrollton and then in Houston during most of their working years.

John’s professional career spanned decades in the greater Dallas and Houston areas, where he worked for two major ready-mix concrete companies. He supervised fleet vehicles and maintenance, and later served as a plant manager. With his engineering background, he was known for his mastery of the slide rule and his remarkable speed and accuracy in calculating complex cement mixing ratios. He often boasted good‑naturedly that he could match anyone's calculations, even after handheld calculators became available.

In retirement, John and Doris fulfilled their dream of escaping big‑city chaos and built a home on four acres in rural Whitewright, Texas, in 2003. When not traveling or camping in their big RV with their beloved poodle, they embraced the joys of quiet country living—gardening, tending their land, and spending time together watching panoramic sunsets from their covered porch. John also served his community as a local elections official and as a deacon in a local Christian church.

A talented cook, John especially liked hosting cookouts for family and friends, and canning and sharing vegetables from his large garden. He enjoyed camping, fishing, golfing, and hunting. He also relished Sunday afternoons in front of the TV watching football, golf, or NASCAR. Family celebrations were another highlight of his life, and he and Doris will always be remembered for their remarkable generosity in bringing favorite dishes, desserts, and gifts at any occasion.

John was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Doris, who passed away following her courageous battle with cancer.

John is related to the Harmon family of Lewisville and is survived by many extended family members and friends. He will be lovingly remembered by all who knew him.

The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to the administration and staff at Lewisville Estates Assisted Living for the compassionate care provided to John throughout his time there.

A private celebration of life will be held for close relatives. John’s many friends and acquaintances may sign the online register and leave memories at www.mulkeymasonlewisville.com.
