James Akpan Umoh, born Effiong Akpan Akpan Umoh, 79, of Flower Mound, TX, passed away peacefully on July 10, 2024, at Life Care Center in Plano, TX. James was born in Ikot Ekang, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria to Akpan Akpan Umoh and Nwa Nwa Udofia Udo on June 18, 1945. James was a graduate of Ukpom Central School in Nigeria, and a veteran of both the Nigerian Police Force and the Nigerian Civil War. James emigrated to the United States in 1973, earning a Bachelor's Degree from Western Illinois University and an MBA at Murray State University in Kentucky. For thirty years thereafter, James was a prominent engineer for GTE (now known as Verizon), receiving several awards and nominations for Peer Recognition and Team Leadership.

James was a proud member of the Akwa Ibom Association of Dallas as well as a member and pioneer of Mboho Ndito Ibibio of Dallas, a non-profit organization whose mission is to "promote programs and services that bring progress to the community members of Akwa Ibom State residing in Akwa Ibom State and the United States, to preserve the rich cultural heritage and tradition of the Ibibio people, and to encourage qualitative education among Ibibio youths".

James is predeceased by his parents, Akpan Akpan Umoh and Nwa Nwa Udofia Udo, his brothers Emmanuel Akpan Umoh, Michael Akpan Umoh and Edet Udoh, as well as his sisters Akon Lawrence Etim and Ikwo Edet Udo. James is survived by his children Enoh Andrew Thomas, Lloyd & Sarah Lynn Crayton, Bassey James Umoh, Stephanie Jean Umoh, Eme E. Odokama, Ima-Ima S. Effiom, and Ekemeni James Umoh, and grandchildren Campbell Jean Crayton, Kennedy Jordan Crayton, Carter Jade Crayton, Lincoln Caine Crayton, Noah Emmanuel Umoh, and Nicolai Ekemeni James Peace.

James is also survived by his sister, Arit Usoro, and her children Solomon & Unyime Usoro, Ubong Usoro, Oto Usoro, and Emem Usoro. Additional close surviving family members include Jessie E. Umoh, Udeme & Agnes E. Umoh, Eno Emanuel, Koko & Aniema Umanah, Patrick & Nsikak Ofuokwu, Akaniyene & Ini E. Visitation will begin at 10:00 am on July 23, 2024, at Mulkey-Mason Funeral Home, 740 Edmonds Ln., Lewisville, TX. Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 am on July 23, 2024, at Mulkey-Mason Funeral Home.

Pastor Wayne Hamit of Hope Lutheran Church in Corinth is set to officiate. A burial will follow at Old Hall Cemetery in Lewisville, TX. A reception will follow the burial. Arrangements have been made by Rey Pine with Mulkey-Mason Funeral Home. James was a major advocate for education, so in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Umoh Scholarship Fund at Western Illinois University, James' Alma Mater, to aid incoming

Nigerian students in their studies. A special thank you to Karen Kremer, the Palliative Nurse at Lewisville Hospital, for going above and beyond to meet our father's needs and for guiding our family through this difficult time. To all of the nurses, doctors and staff of Nigerian descent, who made sure to take special care of your brother, for bringing warmth, light and culture into otherwise very cold hospital rooms - your generosity of spirit will not be forgotten. To the Akwa Ibom community in Nigeria and all of North Texas, please accept our gratitude in helping our family through this challenging time and for all of your contributions towards honoring his life. Our father was a very proud Akwa Ibom man who loved his children, family, and his culture deeply. He was a man of God, a lover of music, dance, and good food. He could light up a room with his smile, storytelling and humor. He was loved by many.
