Douglas C. Cranston, 74, passed away at Texas Health
Presbyterian Hospital Flower Mound, Texas, on Sunday,
June 8, 2025.

Doug was born in Erie, PA, son of the late William and
Ruth Cranston. A job transfer brought the Cranstons and
their three sons to Johnstown, PA. Doug graduated from
Westmont Hilltop High School (class of '68) and the
University of Pittsburgh in 1972. He began a career in
telecommunications at GTE and Verizon that spanned 43
years, retiring in 2015. Like his father (and many relatives
and friends who worked at GTE/Verizon), the company
provided an interesting career in the Telecommunications
field. His childhood included frequent family travels and
camping, which prepared him for his career moves that
included multiple stops in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana,
and Texas. In spite of the relocations and traveling for
work, his family was always his top priority. He actively
participated in his sons' school and scouting activities
(even serving as Cubmaster for a time). Doug had many
interests, the greatest of which was a love of reading, and
learning. Visiting book stores, libraries, and computer
stores were frequent family weekend and vacation
activities. He loved to sing and could be heard singing
along to his favorite tunes (with or without headphones).
He was known for recounting the many stories of his youth
(adventures while a Boy Scout, his summer job in the
Steel Mill, and numerous tales of his treasured times with
family and friends). He often displayed a wry sense of
humor. When asked how he was doing, his answer might
be "I'm fine, but I would be better with some Prime Rib!".

He was a man of Faith, a wonderful and supportive
husband, father, brother, uncle, and friend. His family
meant everything to him.

Doug was preceded in death by his parents and
brother, Gordon. He is survived by his wife of 51 years,
Janet (née Polak), sons Ian and wife Yaru Grace Liu, and
Evan, Doug's brother Bruce and wife Candyce, Ellisville,
MO, their sons Brandon and wife Sara, and Kyle,
Gordon's daughters Lauren, and Sarah (Clarke) Fisher.
He remained close to all of his sisters-in-law and is
survived by Patricia (Christopher) Lang of York, PA, Gloria
(Donald) Maier of The Villages, FL, and Karen (Timothy)
Smith of Johnstown, PA. Doug will be fondly remembered
by his nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family.

Doug passed away surrounded by his family and
friends. He will be lovingly remembered by all who knew
him.

Following his cremation (Mulkey-Mason Funeral Home,
Lewisville, TX), there will be a celebration of life at a place
and time as yet to be determined.
