Dan Trammell, 80, passed away peacefully on September 16, 2026, having endured with dignity the debilitating effects of Lewy Body Dementia for more than five years.  He was born on September 18, 1945, in Lamesa, Texas to Fred and Jodie Trammell and grew up surrounded by sunny skies, oil wells and cotton fields.

After graduating from Lamesa High School, Dan went on to complete his Bachelor's Degree in Marketing at Texas Tech University before obtaining his J.D. from the University of Texas School of Law in 1972.  That same year he became a member of the Texas Bar Association and moved to Denton to become an assistant district attorney.

Elected Denton County Judge in 1975 at just 29 years old, Dan played a highly significant role in the history of the Courthouse-on-the-Square. He served as chief executive during a pivotal transition period that saw the expansion of Flow Memorial Hospital, county landfill selections, and the construction of the new Joseph A. Carroll Courts Building, where his name appears on the cornerstone.  Most notably Dan Trammell was the last County Judge to preside over and office in the historic Courthouse.

Dan practiced law here for more than forty years, beginning with offices in the former Student Art Theater on the Square (currently Pasqual's/Andy's Bar/Red). He served as president and on numerous committees for the Denton County Bar Association. Dan leaves this county and this world behind with multiple generations of clients, friends, and family grateful for his guidance.

He will be remembered for his kindness and compassion as well as his professional and personal achievements, including several stage appearances in community and school productions with his wife, family and peers.  Dan had a great sense of humor and a slew of friends and played an integral role on many not-quite-championship level golf foursomes.  He was a proud and loving father and grandfather who for two generations was always there to support performances, games and school events.  Married for more than 50 years, he is survived by his wife, Donna, his children Daniel Adams Trammell, Amy Hargrove Sime (Craig), John Taylor Hargrove (Stacy) and Emily Hargrove Black (Les). To his grandchildren Henry Sime (Darcy), Aden Black, Saylor Black, Lucille Hargrove, Jolena Hargrove and Edison Hargrove, he will always be the much-beloved GranDan.

A memorial gathering will be held on Sunday, Oct. 11th, at 5:00PM. Location will be in the Commissioners' Courtroom of the Courthouse-on-the-Square, Denton, Texas.  In lieu of flowers the family would gratefully appreciate contributions made in his name to local charities or to The Lewy Body Dementia Association (LBDA).
